When Friedrich Nietzsche proposed the statement that “God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him” it came about because Nietzsche was an atheist and did not believe God existed. In one way he was showing that science had taken God out of the picture. Even though that may have been the original intent if you look at Christianity today the statement could also be applied that “God is dead” in regards to our faith. We are not saying that God is actually dead because we believe that He is alive! As Christians we often don’t really live like God is actually alive though. During the next few weeks we want to take a look at what we as Christians can do to revive our dead faith and become what God intends for us to be for Him.

If you look around at the world there are many Christians who seem to be living in this area of “dead faith”. They believe that Jesus is their Savior. The real issue is you wouldn’t be able to tell from looking at their lives that they are Christians. We as a culture are in a place where becoming practical atheists while professing to be Christians seems to be the normal way to do life. This is something we as the youth must start to change so we can get back to the original intent of what we are all about.

There are many stances on how we as Christians should live. If we really want to get down to the core of what we are about we are supposed to be different. Somewhere along our lineage we have implanted in our mind that Christians are supposed to stay contained to their Christian friends, their Christian church, their Christian t-shirts and sayings, but Jesus was never contained. We live in a society of cookie cutter Christians who all look the same as everyone else. While we should make every effort to live differently in this world most Christians look exactly the same as the rest of the world. We must stop living like this because it conveys the message that we really don’t care about God, so as Nietzsche suggested we live like “God is dead”.

When we look at the life of Jesus Christ who we know was sent as God incarnate to save us from our sins there was nothing ordinary about His life. He didn’t just go to the places everyone else went and he didn’t do the things that the typical “good Jewish person” would have done. This doesn’t mean that Jesus did anything wrong but that the culture had gotten it all wrong. The Pharisees had lead the people into a very legalistic culture and if we look at our present day culture there are not many differences. There is a problem with Christianity when we are the ones who are legislating our religion, persecuting minority groups, and living like non-believers when we should be living like Christ.

The great thing is we still have a chance to make changes that will positively effect our generation. We are stuck in a cycle we must get out from under. Superchick sums it up well in their song Hero when they say:

Now it’s our time to pick a side.
So don’t keep walking by not wanting to intervene,
Cause you just want to exist and never be seen.
So let’s wake up, change the world
Our time is now

It is time for a revolution of our generation that isn’t afraid to love those who others won’t love. It is our time to make a change instead of allowing it to continue on the current path. Instead of living in our Christian circle we need to break out. We need to flood the world with a love they have never seen before, something no one ever gives. We need to spend less time on legislating religion and more time on actually taking time to love the people around us.

Christ spent most of His time hanging out with those people who were living in sin. He was the ultimate example of what we should look like. Be willing to do life with those who are far from God and just be different. We were not called to be like everyone else, but to be the ones willing to stand for the oppressed, the persecuted, the underprivileged, and the ones who have no voice to offer. We should not sit in our houses with all of our stuff and look down on those who are not like us.

The things of this world will fade and at the end of our lives it will not matter what people here say about us. The only opinion that will matter is that of our Heavenly King. Begin to look internally and see how your life is doing. Are you living out an untamed faith that is fully on fire for God? On the flip side of that are you living like God may as well be dead because you say what you believe but never act it out? Take some time to see where you are and look for our upcoming blogs about how we can make a difference to show the world our God is alive. Let us be different for the cause of Christ!

Over the past few weeks we have been talking about how we believe God would have us share His message to all people. We know in Christ we find true life. That is the message we need to be conveying to everyone and not condemning others to hell no matter what the reality. The biggest question we face is what’s next for us. We have been investing and praying for this person or people and maybe they have come to Christ or maybe they are still be getting to that point. Let’s make something clear. We have spent a few weeks talking about a process that could take months, years or longer. Just because it takes a while doesn’t mean you can’t continue to pour into a person’s life. You continue to pour in because of your belief. Sometimes after we help bring someone to Christ they get lost in the shuffle. We want to talk today about what’s next for us in our mission to reach the lost.

For those of you who know someone or maybe you have recently come into the faith we rejoice with you! We would love to encourage you along in the journey, so just drop us an e-mail at kyle@divedeepministries.org and let us know. It is truly amazing to be part of God’s big plan. As a new Christian things can be pretty scary at the beginning of the journey. We as Christians usually guide a person to the journey and then say have a great day. This is something in need of change.

As someone new to the faith you may begin to see some things you need to change but aren’t sure how. There is not a formula or a set of steps which will work for everyone, but we do know God can help us though anything. The biggest thing to do is to begin pressing into God. You can do this by getting involved with your local youth group or church but even that is not enough. Begin to read the word every day even if it is just a little piece. A good place to start is in 1st Corinthians or the other writings of Paul. Paul does a great job of communicating what life should look like as a Christian.

There is a tendency sometimes for believers to think they need to “renew” their salvation like they would a parking meeter. After you have accepted Jesus as your Savior you don’t have to recommit every time you hear the message of salvation. God has saved you and you can’t get away from Him now. Now we aren’t saying recommitting is a bad thing but do it out of God’s spirit prompts and not out of guilt or shame for doing something wrong. Unless you turn your back on God there is no need to recommit and even when you mess up God always loves you.

Along the journey of faith there is always a possibility to start back into your old tendencies. When this happens God has given you grace and freedom from it all. You just have to ask Him to help and restore you. There is no amount of stuff that can get you farther along in the journey. Even following all the rules won’t bring you closer to God. The only way to draw closer to God is to press into His love.

As a new Christian know that sometimes life will be hard like we talked about a few weeks ago, but God promises never to leave us. He is always present and wants a deep relationship with us. In this deeper relationship with God you begin to find the true meaning of life. To live an unhindered life with the God of the universe on your side is an amazing experience. Begin now to trade the things of this world for things God would have for you.

There are hundreds of thousands of people who have not yet tasted true life and freedom in Christ Jesus. Continue to seek them out and love them where they are. Allow them to see you as different and pray God opens the door to sharing the best thing that has ever happened to any of us. Live with them and not above them. Love them through everything even when they don’t want to be. Let’s begin to remix the typical Christian and discover new things God will have for us.

I’ll be taking a few weeks off from blogging myself to transition into some new beginnings for me, but we have some great things in store. We will have some cool people doing some guest blogging for us, and we will launch our new series ‘Remix’ in September. There are some pretty cool things we believe God wants to do with us and excited we get to do this together.

In all you do always remember to Dive Deep!

As we learn how to dive more into worship though prayer, acts of service, and spending time with our God, it would be good of us to talk about why we need to worship. God created us for a purpose, and this week Philip Roland, one of our staff members, was gracious enough to write out some thoughts and ideas on this subject.

You came and bled and died
Gave all you had in life
All for love, all for love
Your life destroyed the grave
Brought grace to those in need
All for love, all for love

Christ died for love. All that Jesus did, he did for love, because everything he did was done according to the will of God (”For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me” -John 6:38). God is love personified–-the very definition of love (“God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” -1 John 4:16). Everything he does is loving and everything about him is loving, from his grace to his mercy to, yes, even his anger (for his anger at us when we sin is derived from his desire for holiness and the knowledge that we suffer when we separate ourselves from him with our sin), and this is because it is his nature to love. As a result, when we say that Jesus died for love, it is not simply a statement of Christ’s love for us, but an affirmation of God’s character and his status as the source of all true love.

Because of this, the fact that Christ died for us while also dying to serve the Father’s will is not contradictory as some people believe (and my affinity for John Piper is about to be made pretty evident here with what I’m about to say). He died first and foremost for the glory of God, and we do benefit from this–obviously we are to gain directly from Christ’s death and resurrection giving us the opportunity to have our sins forgiven and our lives begin anew. In addition to this, however, at a deeper level we are also fulfilled because the Father was glorified through Christ’s sacrifice, and when God is glorified, our ultimate purpose (to glorify God) is fulfilled–-our lives are enriched as a result. The world is only at the right place when God is in his correct position as supreme over all creation. We ourselves are only truly fulfilled when God is glorified, for we were created for God’s glory. When we use our lives to bring glory to God, it naturally draws us closer to him and further fills our lives with his presence, and certainly, what does having an abundant life (John 10:10b) mean if not to have a life filled with God’s presence and Spirit?

We were made for his glory and we find ourselves empty and hollowed out within when we use our lives to pursue other things. This is why when you go into a time of worship with the right motivations–-to lift up and glorify God above all else–-that you often come out of that time with a sense of fulfillment. Your soul knows that you are living out your purpose, and you are made complete because of it. It is for this same reason that if you enter a time of worship seeking this feeling rather than looking to put God first that you will leave dissatisfied. As soon as you begin to pursue this fulfillment as your main concern it becomes unavailable. It only exists as a by-product of placing God at the center of everything. To chase after an emotional high in a time of worship puts the focus on something other than God and renders that sense of wholeness unobtainable.

We must realize that even though God has given us all specific gifts and abilities that we are to use to pursue the specific purpose he has for our lives, that above all else we were made for his glory! Christ died for love and we are to live for love. It is by doing so–-by living our lives in such a way that we die to ourselves and raise God high–-that we will change our world for the better! By chasing the light of God’s glory in all that we do, we will spread the love of God throughout the world. Where we go he will go, and as he is glorified we will be made fully alive.

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21

When the word worship is mentioned you probably begin to think about your favorite hymn or Christian worship song you sing in church. While Michael W. Smith, Hillsong, Planet Shakers and a host of other artist are talented in using songs as a way to worship our God, many people begin to believe that singing is the only form of worship. This is far from the worship that Paul was speaking about in Romans 12:1 when he says:

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God- This is your spiritual act of worship.”

What Paul was really saying is that worship is not only the song you sing but the life you live. Everything you do expresses you in worship. Some of us do great with worship with song, but what about the rest of the time? How are we doing in that? Over this series we want to unpack what Paul is talking about and dive into the subject of worship. Come along with us as we learn more about worshiping our amazing Father in Heaven.

Probably the best way to understand worship is for us to understand more of the reason why we were created. There are many people who believe they are here for different reasons, but we have been placed here for a specific reason and that is to serve and worship our God. Sometimes we casually toss this to the side, but our God desires for us to worship him wholeheartedly. By God’s design we are all created differently and as parts of the body of Christ. With that in mind we all connect in different ways to our God.

Worship happens when we have an intimate connection with our Heavenly Father. It requires a heart interaction as opposed to a head interaction. Our attention is focused on Him, and we end up feeling much closer to God in times of worship. Some people can’t fully engage in a worship song, but the way they worship is through acts of service or quiet times. The fact is that we as Christians tend to find it strange when someone isn’t engaged in worship on a Sunday morning, but that’s the beauty of the way God made us all unique.

When we look in Romans, Paul says “Therefore, I urge you brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices…” He presents a paradox for us, because traditionally in Biblical times you would sacrifice animals as atonement for your sin. What most people don’t do is look at the context of this verse to understand that the idea of being a living sacrifice isn’t a paradox at all.

The word therefore means that we have to look at what was said in the past verses. Paul has been writing about how God has sent His Son to save all of us through His mercy. In response we should offer ourselves as living sacrifices, because His Son was the ultimate living sacrifice.

We know worship is having a connection with our Father. When we think about it there is no way to obtain that status without the blood of Jesus Christ, but even that is not enough. Paul goes on to say in Romans 12:2 that we:

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

We can not stay stagnate if we are to truly worship our God. If we are connected to the Father we will want to change. Paul is communicating to us that we can not just show up in church every Sunday, sing a few songs and call that worship! We must change something within us, because if not we aren’t really worshiping our Father. Our change starts on the inside deep in our soul and overflows to our outward appearance. Worship becomes a process, not a moment.

If you wonder how you are worshiping God look at how you act in day to day life. Are you truly allowing a transformation to take place and renew your mind, or are you just worshiping without the heart. Paul was passionate about followers grasping this concept. In this series we want to unpack what it really means to worship our Father who has poured out His mercy on us. Take this week and do a self inventory of how you are really worshiping our God and begin to see where you need to undergo a transformation.

As we are preparing to enter into a new series starting next week,we wanted to pause and explain a little bit more about Dive Deep.

Dive Deep Ministries was founded at the beginning of 2009 by a few students who were tired of seeing a generation continue to forget their spiritual roots. We have been given numerous things at our disposal for advancing the kingdom, and we want to use those to the best of our ability. This includes things like Twitter, Facebook, Blogs and the like to proclaim the message of Jesus Christ to more people than we can do at a local level. We don’t want to be super spiritual, but we want to go after issues that everyone has and talk about things that are relevant to our culture.

We are founded on the principles of a few key verses. 1 Timothy 4:12 gives us a look at one of the reasons that we do what we do, even though we are younger than alot of people. The verse says:

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”

Mathew 28:19-20 also gives us direction and purpose. It says:

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

We may not belong to the same denomination or share the same political beliefs, but what we do share is a love of Our Savior and a desire to learn more about Him.

Dive Deep is not a church or affiliated with a specific denomination. We do, however, believe a few core principles about our faith. We believe that Jesus Christ was God in the flesh and lived among us, was crucified on the cross so that everyone could be redeemed though Him and live forever in eternal salvation, and that he rose again on the third day. We believe that salvation is open to anyone who calls upon the name of the Lord and commits to follow Him all the days of their life. The only absolute truth is the Word of God, and it holds no conflict with it’s text.

It is our desire to expand the ministry reach of Dive Deep. Over the summer we will be launching some new and exciting things. There will be some changes along the way, but our mission will stay the same.

Next week, we will be starting a series called Living Sacrifices. We will take some time to unpack the idea of worship. We hope that this series will help you find your pathway of worshiping the Father in your daily life.

Have a great week!

If you have ever been in a relationship with someone you have probably encountered some awkward moments. Looking back these don’t seem so awkward now. We believe that something is awkward because we have never been in that situation before and this can sometimes complicate our relationships. With almost 50% of marriages ending in divorce in the United States we have to find a way to rise above the statistics. To defeat the numbers, we need to understand what a Godly relationship looks like and practice it.

The coolest thing about relationships is that they were not just some random idea that someone thought of, but God came up with the big idea in the first place. In the Garden of Eden, God saw that it was not good for man to be alone so He created woman. Maybe it was God trying to create a better version of man but we believe that when He created man, relationships were also created. Adam and Eve were quite happy until they fell into sin and had an awkward moment when they tried to hide from God. They were ashamed, so they hid and were eventually thrown out of the Garden. The idea is that we can’t hide when we mess up our relationship with God, and we should strive to be more in tune with Him.

Some of the most common issues that create problems for relationships are bad communication, lack of trust, money or job issues, and selfishness. Relationships that have these problems in existence encounter many awkward moments. Communication is key to a successful relationship. We also must take time to listen to the other party and make an effort to understand what they are trying to tell us. Maybe communication problems will never go away, but we can improve our communication skills to overcome awkward moments in our relationships.

Relationships that do not have a strong basis of trust can create instability. If you think of a rock climber that is repelling down a mountain, that person has to fully trust their belay partner on the ground. If the belayer says they will take care of the climber and follows though with this, it builds greater trust. When the climber is coming down, he or she knows that they are being taken care of and don’t have to carry the burden of stress and uncertainty. The trust in their belay partner causes a bond to be formed. On the flip side, if the rope is always slack even though the belayer said they would take care of them, the climber has to be extra careful to watch where they step so they don’t get hurt. Relationships are a lot like a climber and belayer, you must build trust for each other otherwise it can put great strain and stress on your relationship.

One way that you can communicate a respect for the other person in a relationship is to set boundaries. Most people think that boundaries are in place so that you don’t cross lines, which is correct, but they exist more for the respect of the other person. When you are dating, you should set boundaries early in a relationship and make sure that you clearly communicate these to each other. You should also have freedom to talk openly about your boundaries, and if you notice that you may be getting yourself into situations that lead to compromise, it might be time for you to re-evaluate your relationship and your boundaries. Giving into something you have committed not to do can get you into trouble, and will break down the respect and trust you have tried so hard to build. If you play with fire you will get burned exactly like when you play or cross boundaries, you will get hurt.

So often relationships end up becoming more about what we can get out of them rather than what we can give into them. When we are selfish, we begin only to care about what is best for us. Relationships are not an I but a we adventure. We have to walk though relationships centered on others rather than ourselves. This doesn’t mean that we will never get anything that benefits us, but your relationship will be much stronger if you focus more on your significant other than own yourself. This becomes critical as your relationship moves to higher levels because in the hard times you have to work for each other, not against each other.

Over the next few weeks we will be looking at ways to strengthen your relationship not only with the person you are friends with, dating, engaged, or married to, but also how to grow your relationship to God. We are excited about these series of blogs and hope that you are encouraged to press into deeper relationships.

We have set up a Facebook group for the series that you can be a part of and discuss each week’s post. Check it out at: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=68351964049

Recently, it seems like the issue of change has become a hot topic of conversation. Our new president has promised to bring change, companies have had to make changes with the current direction of the economy, and technology is continually changing. With all this change in the air, it begs the question on what change is actually good, and what change can break us down? We also have to look inside ourselves to see if we are really changing or just covering up what we want to change.

It might be helpful to offer some insight on change itself and what the Bible says about change. Change is defined by Websters dictionary to be:

To make radically different

Out of all the definitions for change, this seems to be the one that captures what change means. It also means if you change- it is significant. In a world that casually talks about change, we must be committed to change and become more of what God has called us to be.

Paul addresses the issue of a God type committed change in Philippians 3:21 . Scripture says :

…by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body

This means as we grow, God will change us as we allow Him to work in our lives.

The hardest thing to do is actually make the effort to change. We like who we are, so why do we need to change? We use this argument to justify being stagnant. If we begin to stop changing ourselves we become blind to who we really are, or we become something that we are not. If we fall into resistance to change, we will never become the people that God has intended for us to be.

Lets take a minute to address the topic of positive change. We as a ministry seek to inspire positive change, and use the communication tools that we have been given to help others dive deeper into a relationship with Christ. We believe that Christ centered change is the only good change, and as the definition says, this change can be pretty radical. The Bible says in Romans 12:2:

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

We are not supposed to be the normal people, we are supposed to be different. If we become normal, we risk falling out of a desire to change. When you really think about it, the only change that we as Christians should make is those that are pleasing to God.

Sometimes we end up changing in ways that break us down. They might not seem like significant changes, but the more small changes we make tend to pile up and consume us. These can be things such as hanging out with the wrong crowd or choosing a lifestyle that is not pleasing to God. A common argument among people is that Christians don’t have great lives, but if you stick with the journey God blesses those who are faithful.

It seems that we as Christians have become masters in hiding what is wrong about us and ignore the issues so we are only motivated and accountable to ourselves. We hold back and don’t share with others to avoid the encouragement and accountability that would help us be better people. Some of the issues may be addictions, selfishness, friendships, and a host of other things holding us down. In these situations we start to wonder why God isn’t helping us anymore. The answer is quite simple–we quit allowing change so He can’t move within us.

The best change is one that is initiated by us and moves in a way that is pleasing to God. We tend to get confused on what to change so we need to look back to the One who never changes. He is the only absolute truth, and the only thing that we can fully rely on.

Change is a process that takes time. It doesn’t happen overnight. We encourage and challenge you to search yourself for areas that you need to change no matter how insignificant you may think the change may be. You might be thinking, “Well its no big deal, just a small thing”, but do you really want to justify not changing just to become a lukewarm Christian? Its time to stop hiding what we don’t want to change, and just do it. Life is so much better when you are running towards the God who loves you, and changing your life to align with His principles.

Dive Deep Ministries is always looking for ways to change and reach others. Starting next week, we are going to address relationships in a series of blogs we are calling Awkward Relationships:

Relationships can be pretty awkward at times-things like asking someone out, asking them to marry you, and all the relationship issues that go with all that. We are going to look at some of the common issues among dating relationships, and what we believe is God’s design for relationships. He, after all, is the Creator of the big idea. This is a series that will benefit everyone–dating, single, married, or engaged. We are excited about what this is going to bring-don’t miss it!! Encourage your friends to check this out as well.

This week, we challenge you to find one thing in your life that is in need of change and begin the process. Don’t try to change everything at once, but start with little things and work toward the bigger things. As you change, you will be amazed how freeing it will be for God to do even more in your life.

Have an amazing week and look for our first post of Awkward Relationships next Monday!

Happy New Year! Well, it’s a tad late for that, but I wanted to start off with it anyways. I hope that everyone had a blessed Christmas and a safe New Year’s Eve.

I haven’t blogged in a while, life has been crazy as always. I have been doing a lot of thinking recently about a bunch of things, and really what would be needed in this new year.

A few post ago, I highlighted the song ‘Live your life” by T.I. Every time that song comes on the radio, I can’t help but think about the main underlying theme, which is living your life in a way that impacts others. This can be summed up in one word.

Inspire

This word is defined by Merriam Webster as

to influence, move, or guide by divine or supernatural

Inspiration is best used in the context of dreams, imagination, and the intangible feelings that we all have.

Inspiration is everywhere. Its in art, music, poetry, building design, and even our own thoughts. Young children love to imagine things, and I think that as we grow older that we begin to think that we can’t use our imagination anymore. We lose sight of the inspiration of life. Maybe we forget what it was like to imagine things, or maybe we have been hurt by our dreams not coming true that we don’t think that dreams exist anymore. This is way off from what God has set up for us.

God has created us in His image. Most people believe that this could mean physically, but I believe that our souls are created in His image. This means that we have the ability to do amazing things, with God’s help. I also think that God is a dreamer. He wants us to dream of new things, because when we dream, we can develop ideas to help further His kingdom.

God wants us to be inspired. I think thats one of the reasons he created the sunrise and the sunset. I love just sitting there, watching the sun peak above the horizon, and in the evening drift out of sight. Its unexplainable the power of that moment. I think God likes them too (I would hope so, He created them ).

The one thing that we lack sometimes is the ability to take our inspiration and share it with others. Songwriters are some of the most inspiring people, and they understand this. When they get an idea, they write about it, produce it, and push it out to fans, much like T.I. with Live your Life. But how do we do this when we aren’t a big recording artist like TI?

Its quite simple actually. We just live our lives with a Christ centered focus. When we face trials, we begin to lose our inspiration, and begin to believe the lies of the enemy. We must fight against this, because when we stop believing, it affects those around us.

So I challenge all of you to start off 2009 with this in mind. Lets become an inspiring group of people, that are set on Christ centered inspiration, and lets share that with the world. It could be though song, blogging, encouragement, phone calls, or anything really. I’m taking this challenge, and I hope that you all will join me. Let us become a generation that is looked on as the most inspiring in history. Let us motivate our culture to change for the better, and not a change any politician can give us, but what our Christ the King can give to us.

Lets be a generation that seeks the God of Jacob, and lets share that with the world.

God bless you all as we go into 2009. Lets go after this!
